- Licensing body: State Board of Examiners of Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) Contractors (NJ Division of Consumer Affairs)
- State journeyman license: No (Statute defines HVACR journeypersons who work under a Master HVACR contractor. The Board’s licensing exam path is for Master HVACR contractor — not a separate statewide journeyman card like an electrician JM.)
- Master HVACR Contractor: Be 21+ and a U.S. citizen or legal resident. Usual path: five years in the HVACR contracting business right before you apply — at least four years in a U.S. DOL-approved HVACR (or steamfitter / pipefitter / sheet metal) apprenticeship or training program, plus at least one year as an HVACR journeyperson or licensed plumber doing that work. An accredited HVACR bachelor’s + 1 year install experience, or a related bachelor’s + 3 years supervising installs, can replace the apprenticeship path. An accredited tech/trade/community-college HVACR program can cover two of the four apprenticeship years.
- Exam: see below, via Board Master HVACR examination
- Code edition: Master HVACR licensing examination after the Board finds you eligible. Apply 30–60 days before the exam date set by the Board.

Reciprocity (licensed in another state?)
New Jersey’s Master HVACR path is examination after meeting the five-year / apprenticeship rules. Ask the Board whether any out-of-state Master card shortens paperwork — it is not a simple swap on the statute page. Not confirmedSource: njconsumeraffairs.gov · as of
