How to get a plumber license in Mississippi

Hours, exam, fees, renewal and continuing education for Mississippi plumbing licenses, pulled from official MS sources and checked .

Quick answer
  • Licensing body: Mississippi State Board of Contractors (MSBOC) — plumbing contractor classifications (no statewide journeyman plumber license)
  • State journeyman license: No (MSBOC licenses contracting businesses (commercial and residential classifications), not individual journeyman plumbers. Residential electrical/mechanical/HVAC/plumbing subcontractors on residential projects must hold an MSBOC residential license.)
  • Plumbing contractor (MSBOC commercial specialty): Show experience in the classification (application asks for at least 3 jobs completed in the requested classification). A qualifying party (owner, officer or managing employee) must pass required exams and stay employed by the company. Commercial work over $50,000 generally needs a commercial license; residential plumbing subcontractors need a residential license regardless of the residential trade thresholds in the FAQ.
  • Exam: open book, via PSI (after MSBOC submits qualifier info)
  • Code edition: PSI trade exam for the Plumbing classification (open book) plus Mississippi Law & Business Management exam for all applicants. Review the PSI Candidate Information Bulletin MSBOC sends after you apply.
